The Pempem cave is located on the Green Hills property. Unfortunately access is difficult and quite dangerous. For this reason, the cave is not open to the public. Nevertheless, we wanted to share this piece of information with you. The cave was mapped in 2001, by the same team that mapped the Barton Creek Cave. It was mapped in an effort to find sources for the water in the Barton Creek Cave. However, the Pempem cave and the Barton Creek Cave do not appear to be linked. A report on this survey is available (large file!). The word "Pempem" stands for "Butterfly" in the local Yucatec (Masewal) Maya language.
